The efforts of the pupils, parents, teachers, and stakeholders of Barong Elementary School were recognized by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte by being awarded as 2nd runner-up Cleanest and Greenest (school category) and bagging the Environmental Management and Sustainability Award given last December 9 at the Centennial Arena.

“I have envisioned the school to have a safe environment, and to be a school of agriculture, entrepreneurship, technology, and tourism,” said school head Kaiser Luis U. Magno Jr.

Barong ES has its own organic farm; with organic vegetables that they use for their school based feeding program, a chicken and pig farm, and a fishpond.

The school also promotes livelihood for the community people through seminars in teaching technical skills to parents and 4Ps recipients like how to make carbonized rice hull and liquid foliar fertilizers.

Barong ES also teaches entrepreneurship to their students through their Income Generating Projects of hollow blocks production, and the selling of their harvested vegetables to the community; the proceeds of which is used for other necessities in the Feeding Program and for their other projects and activities.

“We also promote cleanliness, thus, we made our own Material Recovery Facility. It is an essential component of innovative waste management system by means of recycling, which greatly helps in conserving the environment,” Magno stressed.

The school received plaques of recognition and Php65,000 and Php15,000 respectively as cash incentive for the 2 citations.
